As we celebrate Pride month, but still grapple with the devastating loss in Orlando, it touched my heart when I heard about the amazing story behind Bindle & Keep, a Brooklyn based tailoring shop, that specializes in custom suiting for the LGBT community, and many who are transitioning.
Founded in 2011 Bindle & Keep use to cater more to the Wall Street client until Rae Tutera, who’s transgender asked Daniel Friedman who’s straight, for an internship and as fate will sometimes lead us the tailoring team became a safe place for a customer with a very specific need.
Bindle & Keep, now the subject of an HBO documentary, called “Suited,” co-produced by “Girls” Lena Dunham and Jenni Konner, and directed by Jason Benjamin, tells the story of how these two unlikely tailors came together, and the stories of so many that they’ve helped reclaim their confidence as they transition.
“Suited” airs tonight on HBO June 20th at 9p. Bindle & Keep is located at 313 Park Avenue, Brooklyn NY, NY. www.bindleandkeep.com
