This past week, Saks Fifth Avenue, introduced a newly renovated men’s store at its historic Beverly Hills location appropriately named THE FIFTH MAN. The stand-alone lifestyle store offers a one-of-a-kind shopping experience highlighted by all-new designer boutiques, featuring one of the largest men’s shoe shops on the west coast and an underground home for denim and drinks called D-BAR.

The new denim space was designed in conjunction with California Architecture + Design firm Marmol Radziner. The décor includes a lounge area with a custom-designed pool table with an orange felt top, a floor to ceiling street-art-inspired mural by artist Karlsen Clay, boardwalk wood walls, a neon light installation, custom and found furniture swathed in velvet and leather as well as decorative lighting from Marmol Radziner, Organic Modernism, Pfeifer and Moooi, The attached John Allan’s Salon allows guys to partake in a variety of grooming and treatment options while kicking back and having a drink.

I sat down with Oscar Triana the new D-Bar manager to talk denim and about the new space.

Hallman What can guys expect to find when they shop at the new D-Bar space?

Triana We have a little of everything for everyone which includes a wide selection of great premium denim and lifestyle brands like; AG Adriano Goldschmied, Diesel, DL196, J Brand, Joe’s, Hudson, Nudie, PRPS, Rag & Bone, 7 For All Mankind and True Religion, as well as new offerings from up and coming LA-based designers such as Diana Keinejad.

Hallman How many different denim vendors are currently carried at D-Bar?

Triana Currently, we have over 15 premium denim lines, with additional ones coming over the next few months. We are always on the lookout for new and exciting brands to add.

Hallman Can we expect to find a lot of colored denim this season?

Triana Color has been on trend for a few seasons now and I don’t see it going anywhere. Every brand is featuring colored denim in a wide variety of hues this season and they are selling extremely well. Colored denim is the new black.

Hallman Will D-Bar also feature non-denim vendors and brands

Triana Absolutely, we have VINCE and Marc by Marc Jacobs, which are known more for their ready to wear collections, but do include a denim offering as part of their lines, as well as brands like Diesel, Hudson and Adriano Goldschmeid which also do ready-to-wear collections.

Hallman Denim is very personal and all brands fit differently. Will D-Bar have denim style experts on hand to assist with styles and fit?

Triana Yes, I have a staff of 9 denim associates that have been thoroughly trained and understand the styles and fit of all the brands we carry.

Hallman What, would you say, are the most important elements to keep in mind when shopping for denim?

Triana To keep an open mind, there are so many brands available today and it can be very overwhelming when shopping for denim. If you are looking for a specific brand or style we can help you find it and if you don’t know what you are looking for we’ll help you find a style and fit that is right for you.

Hallman What’s the best way to care and keep your denim from looking worn or faded?

Triana I always recommend buying jeans according to your needs. If you prefer a light wash, then put them in the washer inside out and if you’re a fan of a darker wash, then first brush them to remove the loose dirt then roll or fold them then place them in a plastic bag and place the bag in the freezer, yes the freezer for a few days. It removes the bacteria while allowing you to preserve the wash. If your denim is heavily soiled then it’s probably best to have them drycleaned. www.s5a.com
